I have been reading the Book of Proverbs because I want to be wise and the Bible is always a good place to go for wisdom. A few verses have really stuck out to me.
Hard Work: Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, Which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler, Provides her supplies in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest. How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep—So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man. - Proverbs 6:6-11
This is one of my favorite Bible Passages. You do not need someone to tell you to get to work. Being lazy only has one outcome.
Finances: There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing; And one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches. - Proverbs 13:7
Wealth is what you do not see. Do you do everything to show that you have something or do you live below your means to ensure you actually have something?
Friends: He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed. - Proverbs 13:20
Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are. You cannot be surrounded by foolishness and expect you will somehow be the one who is different.
Relationships: Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with the wife of your youth. As a loving deer and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; And always be enraptured with her love. - Proverbs 5:18-19
Dance with the one you came with. Stop looking at everyone else
Contentment: Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife. - Proverbs 17:1
Not all money is good money. Chasing after more and more never leads to the ending we desire.
Generosity: The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself. The people will curse him who withholds grain, But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it. - Proverbs 11:25-26
There is something about keeping your hands open to share what you have with others. It always has a way of coming back to you
Love: Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. - Proverbs 4:23
Be careful who you allow into your heart
Knowledge: Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you.” - Proverbs 4:7-9
If you have knowledge and understanding in various things in life, everything else follows. Do not chase riches cause it will never give you what you want
I could keep going but I think you get the idea
But as I read and felt refreshed something struck me. There was absolutely nothing new in the wisdom being shared.
These same wise words are the things my parents shared and tried to teach me as I grew up (albeit in not as succinct or beautiful words).
They are the same wise words, I hear when listening to the "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius or listening to old folks telling you about life.
It is the same advice I get when I read books like "Psychology of Money", "Richer Wiser Happier", "The subtle art of not giving a f$$k", or "Atomic Habits". Literally, every Self-Help book that has ever been written.
Everyone is saying the exact same thing
Then I realized a second thing. Good advice is actually quite
Which makes it very easily ignored. For example, if you want to get healthier all you have to do is:
Eat good nutrition-dense foods
Get an adequate amount of physical activity daily
Sleep
We have all heard these things billions of times but they are boring. What we want to hear is:
Secrets to gaining abs in 30 days
The new superfood that will help you lose weight
Here is the one diet that unlocks your weight loss journey
One way actually works, the other gets a ton of views on social and gets you to buy products.
I love the way Proverbs 1 talks about wisdom being obvious. Verses 20-22 say:
Wisdom calls aloud outside;
She raises her voice in the open squares.
She cries out in the chief concourses,
At the openings of the gates in the city
She speaks her words:
“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
For scorners delight in their scorning,
And fools hate knowledge.
These verses make the point that wisdom is readily available EVERYWHERE you look. It is not hiding from you. It is in the obvious things we all know we should be doing.
However, when you choose to ignore wisdom there is a price to pay. Verses 24-27 say:
Because I have called and you refused,
I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded,
Because you disdained all my counsel,
And would have none of my rebuke,
I also will laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when your terror comes,
When your terror comes like a storm,
And your destruction comes like a whirlwind,
When distress and anguish come upon you.
The question we have to ask ourselves is:
WILL I CHOOSE TO LISTEN TO LADY WISDOM?
Thanks for Reading
