One of my 10 Rules for Money and Life is:
Not all Advice is Good Advice.
Not all Good Advice is
GOOD for ME
Essentially learn to discern what is helpful to me and what is not. But to do this, you first have to know who “ME” is.
One of my favorite quotes (I love quotes) is from the book “Art of War” by Sun-Tzu. It is a legendary book that was written between 475 and 221 B.C.E. according to most scholars. In other words, we do not know when it was written. Regardless the book has stood the test of time and has a lot of wisdom within it. It was written for warring generals but can be implemented in our daily lives. Anyway, the quote is:
We are in an age where everyone wants your attention for various things. I wrote last week about Distractions Everywhere. WE live in the information age, but I tend to see it more like the INFORMATION OVERLOAD AGE.
Every answer we need is right at our fingerprint, we just have to Google it. But that brings up 1000 different search results. Then if you are on TikTok or YouTube or IG or any other social media platform. You have people like me screaming all kinds of one-off advice on the “Perfect way to handle your Finances.”
The question becomes how do we filter down those result options? How do we decide whose voice to listen to and whose voice to put on the back burner? Because like I said, “Not all good advice is GOOD FOR ME”.
The answer much like investing is simple to say but difficult to implement. We have to spend time as Socrates says Knowing Ourselves.
This means spending time asking and answering questions about ourselves like:
Who am I?
Who do I want to be?
What are my goals?
Where do I want to be in the next X number of years?
What are the things I want to see happening in my life?
The more we can answer these questions, the easier it will be to filter out the noise.
I say all of this as someone who is having to do the same thing. Every time I think I figured it out something changes.
It is a process and I am still PROCESSING.
