We Don't Earn The Same
This post is 339 words and a 2-minute read.
I was speaking to a mentor of mine at work, he had just moved his family from Maryland down to Atlanta. We were talking about home prices and how crazy interest rates have gone. Then we talked about the area he bought his house and the reasons for it. He told me the price of the house and I was completely floored. He laughed at my incredulousness. I was like I can't imagine paying that much. Then he said something profound. He said, "You shouldn't, WE DON'T EARN THE SAME."
We spend an incredible amount of time focused on how people spend their money. From Instagram posts to reels to TikTok to blogs or articles to commercials. All detailing how people either have chosen to spend their money or how we "should" spend our money.
It is so easy to feel some level of pressure when we see our friends doing things that seem amazing. Whether it be:
A wedding that has all the things.
A vacation to the most beautiful parts of the world.
A new car with all the latest tech features
A house with more space than they know what to do wit
An outfit with the latest and greatest name brands
The most viby restaurant
Successful businesses
Large social following
so on and so forth.
All things that get us to start asking, "What am I doing with my life? Why can't I have those things as well?"
Recently that saying from my mentor has been ringing in my head. Every time I see a friend doing something cool that I wish I had the opportunity to do. I have to remind myself, "We don't earn the same."
We are walking different paths and neither is necessarily better just different. Yes, they can do those things now. It doesn't mean that I'll never be able to do them. Maybe just not at the same pace as they are because We don't earn the same.
Remember Generosity > greed
